Important Poker Terms

All-In: When a player bets all of his remaining money. If all but one player goes all in, no more betting can take place, and cards are turned face up as the remaining communal cards are dealt.

Bad Beat: When a player with a hand that has a high-percentage chance of winning loses to a hand with a low percentage chance of winning. Example: Someone with A/A loses to someone with 6/7 because the cards on the table are A/5/8/K/9, giving the other player a straight.

Bluff: To bet or raise, despite having a bad hand, in the hopes that other players will fold.

Buy-In: The minimum amnount chips required to enter a game.

Check-Raise: To check when the betting comes to you, but then raising the next time the best comes to you.

Flush Draw/Straight Draw: When a player needs one specific type of communal card to complete a flush or straight.

Free Roll: A poker tournament that costs nothing to enter.

Heads-Up: When only two players remain in the game.

Kicker: The highest non-paired card that determines the winner in a tie.

Pocket Pair: When both of a player's pocket cards are the same.

Split Pot: When a pot is split among players that tied in a hand.
